Hosting This Years Sutton Coldfield In Bloom Awards

We were delighted to host the Sutton Coldfield in Bloom Awards last night (Wednesday 26th September, 2018), here at Halls Garden Centre! All of the gardening enthusiasts from around the town joined us for this special night, in order to celebrate the winners in each competition category.

The competition started in June this year, when all of the local residents of the town were encouraged to join in and get involved with gardening, whether they were experts or just starting out. We were lucky enough to host the winners event at our garden centre, where the winner for each category was announced, along with the overall winner for 2018.

The top winners were as follows, for Best Front Garden was awarded to Raymond Davies, James Stephens won the Best Hanging Basket category, Best Pub, Hotel, Restaurant Frontage was celebrated by the Gate Inn. Best Retail, Commercial Frontage was awarded to Communitea Café, for Best School Langley Special School were the lucky winners this year. Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust won the Community Involvement Project and Best Wildlife/Eco Garden won by Rainbow Garden, who commented:

“The garden was a piece of waste ground where people were fly-tipping. I didn’t want that in my back garden so I took it upon myself to do something about it and decided to turn it into a garden that everyone could enjoy.  Children especially love to see the garden.  Not only are the seasons celebrated but the garden is themed to celebrate events throughout the year and it's lovely to see the children coming to the garden to see what surprise is in store”.

The Champions of Champions 2018 was awarded to Raymond Davies from Fox Hollies Road, who commented: “Everyone that stops outside our house to take a photograph of the garden tells us how happy the garden makes them feel and the children who walk to the Deanery just love the flowers.”

David Hall was one of the judges this year who was also at the ceremony last night and told us: “We were delighted to support the first Sutton Coldfield in Bloom garden competition and I congratulate all the winners and runners up in each category. The overall response was overwhelming with lots of residents, businesses, schools and community groups all coming together to take part in brightening up our wonderful town.”

Councillor Derrick Griffin, the Mayor of Royal Sutton Coldfield said: “We were bowled over by the number of entrants to this first community garden competition. Judges had a very difficult job and everyone who entered needs congratulating for their hard work in keeping their gardens looking beautiful in such a hot summer." 

We would also like to thank our Garden Room Coffee Shop staff, located within the garden centre for helping out during the night and arranging a spectacular display and refreshments for the participants and guests.
